If the holiday season were only filled with visions of sugar plums we wouldn’t have to give gaining weight a second thought. Here are five suggestions from our wellness staff for avoiding weight gain and enjoying a healthy holiday season.
1. Get Up and Get Out
This holiday plan activities that get you out of the house and away from the platters of food. Skiing or snowshoeing are our preferred activities in the great outdoors. Attend group fitness glasses to burn calories and energize your mind. Guests of Steins enjoy complimentary access to a full schedule of wellness classes.
2. Hydrate
Have you ever noticed how much more lip balm you use in the winter? It may be colder outside but that doesn’t mean our bodies need less water. Your body is made up of 60% water. Research from the Institute of Medicine shows that men need 3 liters of water and women need 2.2 liters of water every day. Staying hydrated results in higher caloric burn, better digestion, and keep energy level high.
3. Take Time to Rest
It is not uncommon to lose sleep during the holidays. Sleep deprivation tends to lead to cravings for sugary, carb-loaded foods. While getting a full night sleep is best, we recommend guests visit our Five Star Spa for a wellness treatment.
4. Avoid Baggy Clothing
Resist the temptation to put on sweats and loose fitting clothing during the holidays. You don’t need to wear tight clothing but simply something that fits to remind you to control your portion sizes. Steins skier buffet has an abundance of new culinary creations each day, including a full table to desserts.
5. Plan and Track What You Eat
Start the day off right by eating a healthy breakfast, which has been shown to prevent overeating later in the day. Take a few minutes before each meal to make a plan. Take the time to enjoy the smell, texture and taste of each bite. Here are 5 free apps to help with planning and tracking.

New research shows that even if you work out every day, you still need moderate activity throughout the day. For those who sit for more than 6 hours a day, it is shown to put you at greater risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and premature death.
Advantages of moving
Getting up and moving around helps burn more calories. Standing an extra hour a day will burn 50 calories. That is 350 extra calories a week, 1400 calories a month and around 5 pounds a year in weight loss.
Along with the additional calorie burn, the health benefits include: lower cholesterol, stronger heart, lower risk of type 2 diabetes and t
he added benefit of a more positive attitude thanks to the increase in dopamine.

8 ways to get more daily physical activity
• Take the stairs rather the elevator
• Visit a co-worker in person instead of sending that email
• Stand at your desk
• Take a walk on your lunch break
• Clean up your workspace
• Wear comfortable shoes so you want to walk more
• Use hand weights at your desk
• Do some stretches
When it comes down to it
Sitting too long is not good for you, no matter your fitness level. Moving throughout the day is beneficial to your overall health.

In preparation for the ski season, which begins here at Deer Valley in 10 days, we got a brief tutorial from our personal trainer, Keri McWhirter, on the tried-and-true strengthening exercise for upper body and core – The Push-Up. It is a body weight exercise, working major muscles in your chest, shoulders, triceps and core. Bonus… it can be performed anywhere making it a great way to stay in shape.
Have you ever wondered how many push-ups you should be able to do?
The average 40 year old male should be able to do 27 push-ups.
The average 40 year old female should be able to do 16 push-ups.
The variation is due to the fact that Women typically have a 20% higher body fat count than men.
Five Steps to a Perfect Push-Up:
1. Feet approximately 6 inches apart
2. Tilt your pelvis a little to engage abdominal muscles and create a flat back
3. Place hands below the plane of your shoulders
4. Face your fingers forward – If you have weak wrists, you can place the weight on the outside of your hands to protect your wrists.
5. Keep your joints fluid, do not hyper-extend joints, as you work towards a fluid, full range of motion.

I think we can all agree upon the feelings that a typical spa day elicits. We usually come out feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and calm. But, after my recent visit to the Stein Eriksen Spa in Park City, I came out feeling something more. I felt polished.Starting with the facilities alone, it’s no wonder the Spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge is the only Forbes Five Star rated spa in the state of Utah. No stone was left unturned in its design, from the local artwork and the signature lineup of locally sourced spa products, to the relaxation room with views of the Deer Valley mountains. Even the treatment rooms are inspired with the names of Norwegian Gods & Goddesses.
But the ambiance of a day at Stein’s starts even before you open the spa doors. As I made my way through the beautiful hotel lobby, a gentleman asked if he could assist me, and proceeded to escort me through the gardens to the spa. Each flower, plant and shrub seemed to be perfectly in its place, and the striking colors were enough to jumpstart me into the mode of forgetting about my everyday worries.
At the spa, I was encouraged to utilize the relaxation room, pool, sauna, and steam rooms for as long as I wished before or after my treatment. Because the spa’s focus is on total wellness, I was advised to use both the hot and cold plunge pools. Let me tell you, it was not easy to voluntarily immerse myself in the cold water with all of these comfort-emitting features around me, but the therapist was right. Doing so energized my body, right down to the core.

The Vichy Shower
The stimulation of my senses continued as I entered my treatment room, the Vichy rain bar dolling out steam and sound. There are really no words that can describe the sensation of rain falling on your body while being massaged with a scrub of cedar, sage and salt crystals. As the therapist rinsed the solution locally with a stream of hot water that felt like pure silk, my skin began to feel brand new. With the moisturizing lotion rub that came next, I was restored, completely polished.
So, yes, I came out of the Spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge polished. The day both literally and figuratively made me feel like a sparkling new person, and as I left, I was ready to take on whatever the world had in store for me next.

Guests often ask our therapists what products they should use to combat dry skin. Although it is challenging maintaining a healthy glow through the winter months, it is not impossible. The Spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge is honored to partner with Amala to provide guests the highest quality skincare products.
I discussed the benefits of the Amala Hydrate line with Assistant Spa Director, Breann Vail. “The benefits of the hydrate line is it will restore lasting moisture to dull, dehydrated skin and smooth dry, uneven texture and soothe chapped sensitive skin.” All of these benefits are perfect for guests effected by the dry climate and altitude. “I also always recommend drinking lots and lots of water to keep your skin hydrated,” says Breann.

The full line of Amala products is available at the spa
