In preparation for the ski season, which begins here at Deer Valley in 10 days, we got a brief tutorial from our personal trainer, Keri McWhirter, on the tried-and-true strengthening exercise for upper body and core – The Push-Up. It is a body weight exercise, working major muscles in your chest, shoulders, triceps and core. Bonus… it can be performed anywhere making it a great way to stay in shape.
Have you ever wondered how many push-ups you should be able to do?
The average 40 year old male should be able to do 27 push-ups.
The average 40 year old female should be able to do 16 push-ups.
The variation is due to the fact that Women typically have a 20% higher body fat count than men.
Five Steps to a Perfect Push-Up:
1. Feet approximately 6 inches apart
2. Tilt your pelvis a little to engage abdominal muscles and create a flat back
3. Place hands below the plane of your shoulders
4. Face your fingers forward – If you have weak wrists, you can place the weight on the outside of your hands to protect your wrists.
5. Keep your joints fluid, do not hyper-extend joints, as you work towards a fluid, full range of motion.
